Top 10 risks and challenges of dealing with Far East suppliers

Top 10 risks and challenges of dealing with Far East suppliers Prepare for challenges when dealing internationally with the Far East In a recent interview, the CDS CEO / Managing Director was asked to give some advice on the risks and challenges of dealing directly with Far East suppliers, including some of the things that can and have gone wrong. Below, we have summarised Chris’s TOP 10 challenges, although, after consideration, it did run into 15!  We hope this gives you some points to consider and the challenges to prepare for when carrying out such international trade. It should be noted that Chris has highlighted these points from his own experience and for the technical products he has imported and promoted for 30+ years.  He cannot speak for any other specific industries and products. However, there will be several similarities and parallels regarding the risks and challenges involved. Best regards Meghan Mudge, Head of Marketing The Risks and Challenges with Far East Suppliers Cashflow – You will unlikely get credit terms, so there is a cost and cash tied up before you receive products. This can be up to 6 months! But even if it is cash before shipment when the goods are “ready”, some of the risks below will still apply! After-sales support – Real technical support and troubleshooting from Far East companies can be good in price and lead time, plus maybe a sample, but less so in troubleshooting or technical support, especially when your products are in the field. Product Consistency – The samples supplied can vary from the production items supplied, which can create severe design/manufacturing issues, especially when they already have your money. Quality Control – this can be weak with simple, quick visual tests undertaken. Legal Recourse is very difficult – What happens if the company disappears or supplies you with unacceptable products but will not return your money? Miscommunication – Language barriers should not be underestimated, as they can lead to delays and wrong decisions at the factories. Time zone challenges – you often have a limited window when you can contact the factory, but do not expect an answer that day for the same reason. Due diligence and Quality Control – have you visited and audited the actual factory that will manufacture your products? How can you know it is not just an agent working out of his mother’s kitchen just because he has a website and speaks relatively good English? Have you built that cost into your product cost as it is a cost of sale? Customs and import issues – if they do not complete the paperwork correctly, products can sit in customs for weeks, either in the Far East or the Home country entry port. Repairs and returns – You should not underestimate the difficulty, time, and cost of returning products to China, which is very much set up for exporting and not receiving its own products back again! Freight costs – and management should also be calculated, including the time a distributor takes away and manages for you. Currency risks—the price can fluctuate between the quotation and the actual price, and you transfer the money so that the actual price can rise. Payment scams – It is not unknown for Far East companies to get hacked. If you transfer money to the wrong account, you will lose all your money as the factory never received it. Clarity of terms—This should be crystal clear, as any confusion can be costly and sometimes terminal, especially when they already have your money. Loss of money! – There have been examples of European companies losing huge amounts of money when dealing with Far Eastern companies. That risk never goes away, to be honest, but that is the risk of doing such business. Every company has to ask themselves, ” Can we take that hit?” If not, a local distributor provides the security of supply and after-sales service. Chris Bartram Celebrates 30 Years in Displays in 2024 Cheers to 30 Fantastic Years! This year marks an incredible milestone for our managing Director Chris Bartram 30 years being involved in Displays.  This journey has been filled with innovation, global challenges, and a relentless commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in our field. The early days Before entering displays Chris played table tennis for England Juniors and played semi-professional in Germany. He began his journey at RDS fresh out of university having studies European Business where he could use his fluent German having lived in Germany for 5 years having played Semi-Professional Table Tennis in the German ‘Zweite Bundersliga’. Chris spent 7 years at the company moving from Internal sales to Product Manager to sales manager ass the company grew in what was a rich cross-cultural experience interacting with supplier and customers from all around the globe. This international exposure has been crucial in understanding and integrating cultural nuances into the display world, fostering collaborative designs, and effectively meeting the complex needs of our global customers etc. Chris goes Pan-European Chris then moved to a pan-European position at Avnet as Supplier Business Manager for Sharp and Intel which added to his experience and knowledge. But after only 2 years Chris set up Display Technology in 2001in partnership with the German conglomerate Data Display AG to create the UK arm of the German company. Chris and his team grew this very quickly becoming a major display company in the UK with significant sales and profits and changed the landscape of the UK displays market. Leveraging Decades of Experience With over a decade of experience as an entrepreneur, Chris brings extensive expertise in agile project management, software development, and embedded display technology. These skills have been instrumental in understanding customer needs and realizing their product visions, but also, he has built an excellent team around him. Challenges are the lifeblood of the business The past 30 years have not been without challenges. From rapid technological advancements and economic shifts to the global pandemic, each challenge has been met with resilience and innovative problem-solving. These experiences have strengthened his resolve and commitment to driving forward despite obstacles. As he tells the team, “There are no problems only challenges, and the best companies find the best solutions.” It’s all about Innovation and Partnerships His approach to technology has always been deeply collaborative. This “well-polished machine” has consistently delivered outstanding results, showcasing our commitment to quality and environmental excellence. Over the past six years, our system has evolved, ensuring that our processes not only meet but exceed industry standards. Harnessing the Sun: CDS Takes a Leap in Sustainable Energy with Tesla Powerwall 3 The UK’s First Tesla Powerwall 3 Install is at CDS As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental improvement, CDS is proud to announce that we are one of the first companies in the UK to install the Tesla Powerwall 3 storage battery. This cutting-edge technology marks a significant step forward in our mission to harness renewable energy and reduce our carbon footprint. Our Technical Operations Director explained the innovation behind this new system: “This innovative tech integrates with our three-phase AC grid supply and allows us to either use or store the sun’s rays in real-time.” Thanks to Tesla’s Premium Installers, The Little Green Energy Company, the Powerwall 3 seamlessly works with our existing solar PV array. This integration means we can now store 100% of the solar energy we generate, maximising our use of clean energy and minimising reliance on the grid.   At CDS, our headquarters already run entirely on renewable energy contracts. Since 2021, our solar PV system has produced over 42,198 kWh of energy, saving approximately 16 metric tons of CO2. With the addition of the Tesla Powerwall 3, we take a significant step toward our goal of grid independence, ensuring that we can store excess energy during peak sunlight hours for use when the sun isn’t shining. This not only supports our sustainability objectives but also strengthens our energy security.
